How healthcare works in B.C.
Start with the big picture: who pays for healthcare and where you usually enter the system.
Publicly funded healthcare
British Columbia has a publicly funded healthcare system. If you are eligible and enrolled in the Medical Services Plan (MSP), many medically necessary healthcare services are paid for by the province.
You usually do not receive a bill when you see an MSP-covered physician for a medically necessary visit.
But βuniversal healthcareβ does not mean everything is free
Prescription medications, routine dental care, eyeglasses, physiotherapy and other health services may be handled separately. We will cover these later in the module.
MSP is the foundation of B.C.'s public healthcare system, but it does not pay for every health-related service.
