British Columbia's Medical Services Plan (MSP) helps pay for many medically necessary healthcare services. Most eligible residents should register for MSP as soon as possible after arriving in British Columbia.
What is usually covered?
MSP generally covers medically necessary visits with physicians, hospital care, diagnostic tests, and many emergency services. Coverage for other healthcare services depends on the type of care and your circumstances.
What may not be fully covered?
Prescription medications outside the hospital, dental care, vision care, physiotherapy, counselling, ambulance services, and many medical devices may require additional insurance or out-of-pocket payment.
Private health insurance
Many employers, schools, and private insurance plans help cover services that MSP does not fully pay for, including medications, dental treatment, eyeglasses, and counselling.
Newcomers and healthcare coverage
Eligibility for MSP depends on your immigration status and residency. Some newcomers may need temporary private health insurance until their provincial coverage begins.
Ask about costs before receiving care
If a service is not urgent, ask whether it is covered before your appointment. Clinics, pharmacies, settlement agencies, and insurers can help explain potential costs and available coverage.
